If you’ve ever shopped for hemp products, you’ve probably heard someone ask:
“What’s the highest THC percentage you have?”
It’s one of the most common questions we receive.
While it makes sense to assume that a higher THC percentage automatically means a better experience, the truth is much more nuanced.
The Myth
Higher THC equals a better product.
The Reality
THC is only one part of what makes a hemp product unique.
Think of THC like the engine in a car. It’s important, but it isn’t the only thing determining how the ride feels. Suspension, tires, steering, and road conditions all contribute to the overall experience.
With hemp, those “other parts” include:
- Terpenes – Natural compounds that contribute to aroma and may influence the overall experience.
- Other cannabinoids – Compounds naturally found in the plant that interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system alongside THC.
- Extraction method – Products like live resin, live rosin, and liquid diamonds each preserve different parts of the plant.
- Your individual body chemistry – Everyone responds differently based on factors like metabolism, tolerance, and personal biology.
Why Two Products Can Feel Completely Different
Imagine two vape carts.
One contains 95% THC with very few terpenes.
The other contains 82% THC but has a rich, diverse terpene profile.
Many people assume the first will automatically provide the better experience because the THC number is higher.
In reality, many consumers find the second product more enjoyable because the combination of cannabinoids and terpenes creates a different overall experience. This is often referred to as the entourage effect—the idea that cannabinoids and other compounds in the cannabis plant may work together in ways that differ from isolated THC alone.
While research on the entourage effect is still evolving, many consumers report that full-spectrum or terpene-rich products feel different from products focused primarily on THC.
So, What Should You Look For?
Instead of asking:
“What’s the highest THC?”
Try asking yourself:
- What kind of experience am I hoping to have?
- Is this for daytime or evening?
- Have I enjoyed certain terpene profiles before?
- Am I looking for flavor, relaxation, or something balanced?
These questions often lead to a product that’s a better fit than simply choosing the one with the biggest THC number.
